Front Desk / Instruction

Job Summary: Maker Works Staff ​are responsible for providing a great guest experience for all who enter, regardless of (but not limited to) their age, experience, gender, race, etc. This includes being at the front desk to assist guests, as well as ensuring the safety of members and guests by providing a clean and organized shop, well-maintained tools, teaching, and guidance throughout. Experience in Welding and Metal Fabrication a bonus!

Approximately 16-24 hours / week. Monday - Friday, possible weekends. Shop hours are:

  • Mondays 12:45p-9:15pm, or 11:00am - 7:00pm

  • Saturday & Sunday 9:45am-4:15pm

Compensation: ​Starting at $12/hour, plus an honorary membership and access to tools, training, and classes. Wage increase up to $15/hour based on the ability to get you teaching more classes.

Job Expectations:

  • Gives great customer service to every guest - phone, email, and in person

  • Assists guests with purchasing memberships, classes, and retail products

  • Conduct tours with potential new members

  • Assist members of varying experience with safety and machine set-up questions

  • Perform recurring cleaning and light equipment maintenance tasks (Get dirty!)

  • Use and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for shop tasks

  • Participate in shop projects (i.e. prepping materials, setting up offsite events)

  • Works to help the business continuously improve every shift

  • Assists with record keeping and updating/maintaining various documents

  • Learning and teaching classes

Job Qualifications:

  • Experience in a customer service role preferred

  • Computer savvy - comfortable with email, Google Docs, and learning new software

  • Excellent communication skills - verbal and in writing

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Strong planning and organizational skills

  • Experience instructing in some capacity (Machine Shops, Libraries, Traditional K-12, University, etc…)

Personal Characteristics Desired:

  • Comfortable supporting a diverse culture of welcoming

  • Comfortable working in a shop environment with heavy equipment (Metal or Textiles experience a plus)

  • Creative and enjoys helping others

  • Has patience but also a strong sense of urgency

  • Enthusiastic with positive energy

  • Desire to learn and continuously improve 

  • Strong integrity and diligence
